Pros

The creative culture is really a great reason to work for MTV. One of the most important things for me when looking at a job is the people around you and they really are great people. I have the ability to do my work and always try to get involved in exciting new projects. If my bosses see my interest they get me involved and I appreciate it. Getting interested in other parts of the business and other projects has allowed me to be a valuable part of our group. It is a great place to work and you don't have to wear a suit!

Cons

Because of the economic downturn MTV cut 7% of its work force last month and there were rumors of another one coming. This is just making many people feel uncomfortable with their position. Other than that when the economy is good life is usually good. The pay is never great but is that the reason to work for this company? No. You work here for the people and the opportunity to get into different areas of the company. If you don't ask to get involved you may end up being left behind and bored. You make the job what it is.

Pros

Young, creative staff and atmosphere. Flexible work hours. Casual dress code and work environment. Liberal benefits packages. The Human Resources department is very professional. Usually a fun place to work, especially if you like pop culture. Lots of art-school types all over the company, which will make you feel right at home if you're a creative type.

Cons

Too much bureacracy and politics. MTV (the cable network) dominates all others to the detriment of the other channels in the company. You will only advance through aggressive self-promotion -- there is no training or career development. Not for those older than 45 or so, unless you're in a senior position.

Pros

It is what you make of it - definitely plenty of opportunity to work with other departments and learn. Most people are young, but some of the those who have been there for a while have the "this is the way we've always done it" view - not the most forward-thinking. Looking at it from an outside perspective, people/employers always want to know more about what you do, often opening doors. If you're looking to explore new opportunities or just learn, nearly everyone will open their doors for informational meetings, from coordinators to EVP's - it's definitely a place where you can really see what different departments do and make incredible connections.

Cons

Definitely underpaid for the value and return brought to the company. Of course, everyone thinks they're underpaid for the work they do everywhere, but it's certainly true here - I'm not struggling to pay bills, but the hours just don't equate to the pay. There's also a host of long-timers there who've been in the same position for years and have just given up, making collaboration and trying new ideas a difficult and boring process. The company could use some good incentives and energizing throughout, as complacency sometimes runs a broad course. Cross-departmental projects are very difficult to push through, as everyone needs to see how their group benefits directly, rather than the company as a whole.
