Great Technology Company

Pros

I worked with Betfair for more than five years and I was really happy with the organisation. Its a classic example of a successful dot.com story. Most of the engineers and managers, I came across were really smart and highly skilled in their jobs, so the opportunities I had to learn from them were available in plenty. Anyone who loves technology would enjoy working in Betfair.

Cons

Like any other organisation, things started changing when the firm was being run like an investment bank. Going public and changes in the senior management severely impacted the inherent culture of the organisation. All the experienced personnel who built the company left the company. Redundancies over the years have also not helped preserving the talent and the tacit knowledge people had about the organisation.

Some good people and pay, terrible atmosphere and culture

Pros

There were a lot of great people I got to work with at PP. And the pace of things is fast - you don't get bored. I got to work on some interesting projects. The pay and perks were decent. The strategists in PP know how to make money, so there's no worrying about the viability of the company.

Cons

The company structure is extremely hierarchical and political. Good ideas, good decisions and good people are ignored if they don't orginate from the right level of the hierarchy. There was a lot of blatant sexism and bullying. There often was no recourse for this if the bully was higher up the food chain (see extremely hierarchical). As a result people put up with a lot of behaviour that would get someone fired at a different company. The turnover is high because the work environment is stressful and negative in a lot of areas of the company.

Pros

If you like sports and betting, ideally is the best company around. Nice people and atmosphere and good working hours as well as competent team leaders.

Cons

When you get in you start to feel that is not all gold the bright you see. The company is very british and jerarquic and lower ranks and foreigners are not welcome. Also, during the period on which the company was took public, senior management abuse of their position and got great payouts when the shares got nowhere and employes lose money in the offering. Disapointing,
