Pros

tax-free salaries, location of the headquarters (Secretariat) in one of the world's most beautiful and comfortable cities, 6 weeks of vacation annually

Cons

diminishing benefits, probable contraction (i.e. downsizing and redundancies), lack of vision from senior management, high turnover due to the non-career nature, which impairs continuity and institutional memory, infighting with the field offices and other locations, "consensus" decision making, which often leads to paralysis

Pros

If you want to have impact through quiet diplomacy and dialogue while on the front lines of the conflict cycle in key transition states, then this is a good place for you. Is well respected in the Balkans for the work it has done to promote the peace settlement in the region. Good salary and benefits (if on a fixed term contract )

Cons

If you expect hard core short term visible results from the work you are doing, this is not a good fit for you. Morale is not the highest - depends on what field office or department you are working in Very decentralised and politicized structure makes it hard to effect change quickly. Often progress is only seen in small steps. Limited-tenure of 5 - 7 years for a specific job
