Pros

Good collaboration between departments, sharing of knowledge and resources. Well qualified faculty and extremely supportive of students. All graduate students in the Biochemistry department are completely funded and have minimum teaching requirements which allows more time for research work.

Cons

Certain facilities are not easily accessible to everyone. Budget deficit had led to shutting down of certain campus facilities and laying off of lab personnel and other administrative staff. Departmental budgets have reduced and has affected the class room size, number of courses offered and recruiting new students.

Good for a job, not a career

Pros

Laid back environment. Free classes. good benefits. NCSU has a good culture with lots to do in the nearby area and employees get perks like discounted tickets. If you like college football, staff can get tickets to many of the home games.

Cons

Slow and limited upward mobility. It is difficult to 'make your mark'. Being excellent at your job is almost irrelevant in terms of compensation or promotion. In many cases, NCSU will employ you in a 'Job', but not a 'career'. Most people either leave quickly to advance or stick around forever because their skills are very specific to the university and they are not competitive in the outside environment. Units in the university often have difficulty communicating and due to the nature of the organization, little clear direction other than 'do what you did yesterday'.
