Pros

Laid back environment, intelligent coworkers. Management does a reasonable job of communicating things from the top on down. 40 hour work week is typical. Good place for an engineer with a family. Benefits, despite shrinking in value over the years, are still pretty good.

Cons

Still thinks it's a small company when it's not. Steady erosion of benefits over the years. The gap between the individual contributors and the management continues to grow. The profit sharing formula is insulting. No one realistically expects that NI will ever see 40% growth. Ever. Again. Bonuses in general are kind of a joke. "Gee, thanks for the $100 gift certificate after busting my butt for months on end."

Pros

Never had a layoff, so there is job security. There are several fun projects. The environment is very technically advanced. I learned more in my first year at National Instruments than I did at any of my previous jobs. They have great benefits and provide great learning opportunities.

Cons

Managers are just that, managers, not leaders. They use their positional status to effect change more than actually leading. I have known a few people who were "encouraged" to find another job because some manager did not think they were doing enough, and then others had to take over their projects (or worse, they languished) because they were needed.

Pros

National Instruments is a great company, I'm really happy here. NI really respects and values its employees. One of the motto's here is that we hire the best and the brightest, and we do. NI is extremely flexible on hours, vacation, etc. They have deck parties a few times a year where we all stop working at 4:30 and go outside, relax, and drink from NI-provided kegs of beer. Everyone here really takes the "work hard, play hard" mentality seriously.

Cons

The pay is competitive here, but it isn't the highest around. You can find higher paying jobs. You just have to ask yourself if the extra pay is worth losing all the great things about NI.
