      A good starting ground for a DBA to progress

      Pros

      Learn a lot with different areas of SQL databases from BI to OLTP. Great colleagues while i was there which i learnt a lot from. good tools in place to monitor systems.

      Cons

      callout and not enough back to satisfy using own time and was not enough people in the team to cover out of hours call out. very small pay for callout. old systems and a lot of known issues which were not fixed when teams were aware of the bugs. wasting time investigating for nothing to happen. low salary in market. no power over teams decisions, a DBA should be the gatekeeper but development teams had more say than the actual DBA.

      Pros

      One of the most stable companies in retail Salary is better than nearby competitors High level systems reducing the amount of admin work needed

      Cons

      Processes and ways of working are dated. A large part of the job seems to be pandering to manages changing wants and needs rather than true merchandising

      Pros

      Met some amazing people while working at Next. There are some amazing people who are great at their jobs and really passionate

      Cons

      The culture and work/life balance at Next is appalling. I felt like I had to apologise on the rare times that I would have to leave work on time. It ended up being a demoralising and demotivating company to work for.
