Organization's brand is much bigger than its merit

Pros

Generally free to innovate and "create your own adventure", but constrained by US government policies. Good job stability. Good benefits (Thrift Savings Plan, health benefits matching, Federal Employee Retirement System).

Cons

Very hierarchical with an aging workforce that is often times retired in place. Very difficult to remove underperformers. High level of "office politics" with lower than expected promotion of ideas purely based on technical merit.

Pros

Excellent benefits, flexible work hours. Great workplace morale.

Cons

No paid family leave for government employees, contractors get short term disability for 6 weeks, would be nice if the government at least matched that.
