Pros

I had the opportunity to observe really interesting research and sit in on seminars & talks from world-renowned scientists and astronauts.

Cons

The researchers I worked with were sometimes uncooperative in terms of timing and were difficult to communicate with. They reached out to me to participate in their research yet they communicated very poorly and would often forget to tell me about meetings or scheduled experiments. They were also inconsiderate of my time in terms of getting me started on a project and filing paperwork.

Activity, but no mission

Pros

- Great place to discover and develop skills. - Easy to distance oneself from crises by focusing on your "research." - Security in pay and benefits. - Great place to develop basic skills ("basic" for advanced technology development), then springboard to a more productive career some place else.

Cons

- No mission means a petty, personal service culture has developed and can get out of control. - Leaders are "technical leaders" and are extremely limited in their ability to lead people and teams. - SESers are "shoulder shruggers" who more often than not, fail to deliver for their people. - Favoritism abounds.
