Amazing, until it wasn't

Pros

This is a great place to start your career - lots of smart people around you, lots of learning really fast, and the opportunity to work on one of the biggest most exciting tech products that exists. Having had a job at Facebook makes it pretty easy to at least get interviews anywhere else. The perks and benefits are also fantastic, and the pay is great.

Cons

SO MANY. Again, the glamor of working at Facebook was enough, for a while. And when the company and research team were smaller, it was a lot better. But now, the research culture at Facebook is *TOXIC*. Management is full of people who are there because they want to further their careers, not because they want to help their team members grow. I had a string of awful managers, one of whom actively discouraged me from following my ambitions. (Note that not all managers are awful, some were amazing and I sought them out as mentors instead of my own managers.) Being a researcher at Facebook - especially from 2015 on, was discouraging and miserable enough that it ruined my confidence in my own abilities. Researchers were competitive with each other, and instead of focusing on improving the product, focused on edging out their colleagues for opportunities and recognition. I know several wonderful people who left the company because of the toxic atmosphere and poor management.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We know managers have a huge impact on a person's experience, so we're working to make sure our managers have the tools, resources and training they need to develop, support and grow their teams. We'll continue to focus our efforts in this area.

Pros

Challenging, fast-paced, and lots to learn. Great benefits, though some of them seem a bit unnecessary and wasteful (I don't need another free t-shirt every time we move buildings).

Cons

The performance review process is very political with no set guidelines for evaluation. If you get along well with your boss and people generally like you, you'll do great. That said, it is very easy for a manager or a co-worker to tank you anonymously and with little evidence.

Pros

Not very political compare to other advertising company. Paid is very good, easy to reach quota, growing business in greater china, amazing benefits and great CEO. Great outlook to the business, but need to carefully select team and focus market.

Cons

Hong Kong office culture, and team culture. Over controlling of employees actions... surprisingly, no one speaks English at office because 65% of employees are from China, and 30% Hong Kong. Hard to perform and compete with mainland colleagues because they are good at sucking up and aggressive. At meetings, always need to compete to share things that are meaningless to everyone, and raise your hands as much as possible. Hard to trust anyone at work, even managers and management and HR.
