Pros

The mission of the company is great, some good scientists still remain, and Merck has the resources and infrastructure of a large multinational company.

Cons

Morale in the research division is poor because of job insecurity and because nearly all decisions must be elevated to the highest levels. Job insecurity seems to be contributing to a more political environment, a lack of engagement among employees, poor behavior by managers/VPs, and a reluctance for people to speak up..

Pros

Remote-first culture with solid remote work infrastructure. 25 days PTO is a real benefit and better than many competitors. Some smart and supportive teammates.

Cons

The organization is very bureaucratic – multiple layers of approval and endless internal processes slow everything down. As the company gets closer to the patent cliff, work-life balance has clearly worsened. Workload has increased, but support or headcount has not. Teams are understaffed, yet management prioritizes cost-cutting over hiring. There’s a constant expectation to do more without additional resources. Promotions feel rare and unclear. It’s hard to understand what you need to do to move up, and decisions often feel political rather than merit-based. There’s a strong “average” culture where people who contribute a lot and those who do the minimum are treated similarly. This makes it hard to stay motivated, and burnout is very real.

Pros

Pharma is ... pharma. So this "pros" field is empty.

Cons

The company looks like a joke, but nothing comic, see: - No onboarding process for new employees and they're expected to deliver right away, truly? - You submit a request to admin, hr or IT... get ready to wait months before getting back a meaningful response. - People with no relevant experience gets promoted as managers, wow ? - They fire people due to budget cuts... yet they can find new budget to get new hires, heh ? - Gossips are the new management rule... where the most backstabby or most popular not only gets ahead but pushes down everyone else. What is this? High-school level drama? - Don't expect to get rewarded for your good work... The rule for meritocracy does not apply. The only person benefiting from your work is your boss... so much for #inclusion and #equity. - You want to get promoted? Then make your manager looks good, let him throw you under the bus here and there, yet keep smiling when you help him get promoted first, and maybe, possibly, when other people are not looking.... you might get some scraps.
