This is not a "drinking the cool aid" review. Having spent 15+ years at Merck, I've experienced both prosperous and challenging times. Despite the negative press Merck has received in recent years, it remains an excellent place to work. Historically, Merck has been stuck in the way we've always done business. Based on the current challenges we face, significant opportunities exist for those who want to help reshape how Merck will return to be a competitive player in the pharmaceutical sector. Despite downsizing, excellent advancement opportunities are available. Compensation and benefits continue to be better than most other large enterprises.

The organization has a great sense of pride and identity which drives it's employees to work together.

Cons

Location. I personally enjoy warmer climates. Unfortunately, Merck does not have sites in the southwest.
