Pros

Broad-based pharmaceutical company with opportunities in multiple professional and geographic areas. The range of the company - including human and animal health, prescription and OTC pharma, research as well as sales - provides good scope for lateral moves. The company is well represented in most countries, however expatriate assignments are not fostered.

Cons

Very significant disconnect between values espoused in public and the business culture actually in place. The company and Fred Hassan present a very attractive philosophy and vision, however in reality the company is very aggressive commercially with a lot of cynical attitudes among staff who must act in ways that are not reflected in the espoused culture.

Pros

If we were to return to George Merck's vision, we would be successful again.

Cons

Upper management is trying to live in a new world. But these people are the primary reason why we are failing. How do you change a leopard's spots -- you can't.

Pros

Compensation and Benefits Package seemed very good. It feels good to know that a lot of employees are working very hard to discover and develop medicines knowing that their contributions will hopefully someday lead to the availability of a new medicine to treat someone who is sick.

Cons

Management takes too long to make decisions or implement new processes. It is amazing how long it takes to change inefficient processes - it is because Management really does not take the time to really understand how the work actually gets done. People are making sacrifices (personal time away from family or friends) day after day mostly because they believe in the overall benefits to discovering new medicines, not due to support received from management.
