Pros

I have a great supervisor. There are a number of good 1st level supervisors. Unfortunately the 2nd level and above management have no absolutely no concern about supporting the 1st level supervisors and the day to day operations. The pay level is competitive and the benefits are good and there is an active after-work sports program for employees to participate in. The company is slowly phasing in flexible work schedules.

Cons

turmoil about the future, inconsistent forward looking by upper management, Merck is contracting out work to other companies for manufacturing of products rather than reducing internal cost structures to make the company more competitive.

Pros

When I started at Merck, it was consistently ranked one of the best companies to work for in America. People used to speak with admiration about the company- this attitude prevailed from employees and customers alike. Salaries were competitive and stock options were a real incentive to remain loyal to the company. You were surrounded by people who spent their entire working career at Merck.

Cons

To say that Merck has fallen off that pedestal is an understatement. Most employees are fearful of losing their jobs due to the latest round of cuts. Senior Management is largely absent during this process. This creates an atmosphere of fear and distrust among employees. There is no appreciation for the productivity of employees because if your job is targeted for elimination, you are displaced without any recourse.
