Pros

Extremely innovative company that was one of the most respected in the industry. Until recently, most of the science was performed in-house, with top-notch scientists. Several first-in-class compounds put Merck ahead of its competitors in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Cons

Was a great place to work prior to merger with Schering-Plough. Now scientists spend more time worrying about their jobs than accomplishing tasks in the laboratory. Management is only interested in meeting numbers. A freeze has been placed on all promotions and new-hires for the last 18 months, resulting in higher workloads and low moral.

Pros

High caliber of business acumen among reps Great products to sell Industry recognition as leader Was financially sound while Upheld high degree of integrity

Cons

When things went south with a few of SP's products, communication was not forthcoming Kept on putting off the lay offs - demotivating overall - it was a great company until about 2008

Pros

Being able to perform research and help make a difference with sickness in this world is the best part of working for this company

Cons

Layoffs and more layoffs! As this company integrates with SGP it is obvious that employees are no longer considered an asset by the senior management. With all the outsourcing of jobs it is obvious that $$ is more important than the employees to top management. As we are told no one should expect to have a long career at this company any more. In fact it seems that they want to get rid of the more experienced people as they cost more to keep if you have over 10 years at this company or older than 45 you had better look over your shoulder, as you have a big bulls eye on your back The company is outsourcing everything, research, sales, manufacturing and support staff all being outsourced. Pretty soon the only thing a Merck employee will do is to slap a Merck label on the bottle.
