Pros

If we were to return to George Merck's vision, we would be successful again.

Cons

Upper management is trying to live in a new world. But these people are the primary reason why we are failing. How do you change a leopard's spots -- you can't.

Pros

Incredibly talented pool of technical employees. Merck still recruits many of the best and brightest in the industry. Pay and benefits are good. Merck is one of the largest corporate philanthropists, and has some cutting edge products, including newer vaccines, which truly benefit mankind. I'm proud to work for the company overall.

Cons

It's a very large company, and although it's much less hierarchical than it was 5-10 years ago, and many work processes have been streamlined, there is still room for improvement. There are still too many layers of management in some divisions. Average raises are low (below inflation these days), although bonuses are good.

Pros

It really is hard to list many. The company's benefits are still fantastic. Some of the locations are nice to work at. The severance packages are still very nice.

Cons

When I joined, Merck was a great place to work. People were proud of their jobs. Today, people get fired as a matter of course. The mission is gone. Morale is horrid. Have you ever worked in a place were more than 50% of people are hoping to get fired for the severance package? You have if you work at Merck. The jobs take over your life. Everybody is on call 24x7 on on my type of job and there are lots of them. Management at all levels continues to make bad decisions based on almost no information. The input of the employees is meaningless
