Pros

family-owned, medium size, long tradition, innovative in several businesses, consensus culture, constant sales growth, willingness to become more vibrant and international

Cons

generally slow decision-making processes and inconsistent implementation of strategy. in pharma not clear whether they want to be generic or innovative company, poor pipeline, very bureaucratic processes linked to the commitment to keep all staff in Germany in lifelong positions; pharma R&D has undergone drastic changes in a positive sense with a lot of multinational new staff even in Germany; Corporate support functions (IT) lagging behind

Pros

broad therapeutic area expertise Reasonably decent internal training programs and professional development opportunities Very compliance focused

Cons

work culture at Merck Serono is rather controlling and conservative. Very difficult in my experience to change working practices that are supported by archaic and over elaborate business processes. Innovation is an alien term at Merck Serono and the company are too reliant on their historic heritage to adopt new smarter business practices. Their are also too many employees that work at the global or regional level that boss exactly how operations should be conducted at an affiliate country level. The resources at the country level are very sparse and the plans are over ambitious with little opportunity for affiliates to influence at a local level. In addition the pipeline is extremely lacking with no new products been launched in 9 years. New oncology products are in late stage of the pipeline but are unlikely to be leaders in their class.
