Pros

Great people, great colleagues, challenging assignments

Cons

Horrible travel, partners will burn you out, they completely hired too many people during 2000-2001 and then had to lay them all off when the dot com bubble burst. In 2003-2006, they were understaffed so existing consultants that stayed with it either got burnt out or were forced to quit, which only exacerbated the staffing problem. Now, with the merger with OW, they seem to finally have gotten it right

Pros

Diverse and interesting client projects. Exposure to more issues and problems than one would typically experience in a non-consulting environment. Opportunity to work with several different project teams. Global reach and opportunity to travel. Surrounded by very intelligent co-workers that contribute to individual learning.

Cons

Compensation and promotions are not aligned with work time commitment required. Benefits package is average. Client contact often goes through several chains of command resulting in things getting done slowly. Inefficient processes for market pricing. Training lacks formal atmosphere. Most training is on the job, which sometimes leads to inefficient project work resulting in write-offs from going over budget or errors in project work that need to be corrected.

Pros

There are few boudaries at Mercer as far as career development at least in IPS. There is a lot of great talent at Mercer.

Cons

This firm has a real problem with innovation. They need a few more trailblazers. Many managers are afraid to be the ones that rock the boat and lead change. Be cafeful on the manager that you come in under. Some managers are just trying to lay low and people under them never get anywhere. Don't let them lead you to believe that a Senior Associate has any authority. You don't really earn respect unless you make Principal so if you have 10 years or more experience, negotiate a Principal grade upon hire because depending on the manager, it may take you years to reach Principal status. And there are lots of Principals...many of which don't deserve the title so don't let them act like Principal is a big deal. There are sales people that are hired in as Principals.
