Cultural Fit is Everything

Pros

McDonald's is a fascinating company with really interesting challenges if you have patience. It's a strong company with a long-standing track record of results. When times are good, there are always innovative projects to challenge you. The breadth of initiatives can be amazing and energizing. I worked in a global role, so the range of business challenges was especially diverse. Yet, the resistance to actually fund, develop and implement innovative ideas is even more powerful. Getting something implemented is usually an exhausting process, however, when something builds momentum, it can be especially rewarding. The company has really good benefits and can be a great place to build a long term career if you fit the culture. Similarly, opportunities for training and career growth are outstanding if you fit.

Cons

If you don't fit the culture, you should expect a rocky ride provided you get into the company in the first place (which is far from easy). The strong, operations-focused culture values those who grow up in the business. That's great for those who start there and not so great for those who enter later in their career. The attrition rate of those who come from the outside is very high. Relationships are everything so either you have a long history with people to build them or you focus disproportionately on building them. While there are many bright and talented people, those traits are generally less valued and recognized than relationships and hands- on experience. If you don't fit the mold, being bright or especially talented won't help you. Having the best experience from outside is generally not respected because the company is so inwardly focused. If it hasn't been initiated and proven within the company, it's not likely to be a good idea. Resistance to outside ideas is stifling. It's not to say that there aren't many good ideas internally, but outside ideas are usually repelled. I understand that the company is trying to change this, but you don't overcome 59 years of DNA just through your latest management mandate. Because it's not a necessarily a meritocracy, the politics can be especially intense. If you like political gamesmanship and a high ratio of passive-aggressive co-workers, you'll feel at home. While results certainly matter, there are plenty of examples of "successful" people who advance based more on cultural fit than other tangible factors.

Pros

McDonald's is one of the few companies that is doing well in this weak economy. The strong brand is a huge advantage for the company. For those willing to work long hours, work exceptionally hard and be very agreeable with management, there are advancement opportunities. Benefits are good. The Oak Brook offices are comfortable and well maintained.

Cons

McDonald's is very ingrown and not very open to ideas from outsiders. McDonald's values "nice" people over competent people. It's extremely important to not "rock the boat" - management at all levels is not open to suggestions. Success at McDonald's requires a lot of networking and office politics are very important. This isn't a bad thing, it's just something to be aware of. Knowing how the office game is played is important at every company but is especially important at McDonald's. There's a certain type of person who succeeds at McDonald's - very cheerful, kind of bland, willing to work long hours without complaining, able to be extremely tactful. Again, not all bad, just the way it is. I think it's telling that year after year, most departments score low on the employee survey area asking whether "a free exchange of ideas is encouraged." Many managers are of the mindset of "don't tell me any bad news." The other thing to remember about McDonald's is that it's a very large company. There are small pockets of the company that do interesting and innovative work. The Romeoville Innovation Center is a great place to work. It doesn't seem to have the "play it safe" attitude that pervades much of McDonald's. Overall, the company is not bad but in most of the office jobs, it's much more important to get along with people than to be innovative. Ideally, you want people who are both fun to work with and are great at their jobs and it's important that a company inspire a feeling of respect for all employees. McDonald's does try to do this. However, the social and networking aspects of the company and the need to "go along" are so important to an individual's success that someone who is at all outspoken will have a very difficult time here. Everything I've said to this point has to do with professional jobs at McDonald's. Restaurant jobs are boring and poorly paid. Restaurant managers work extremely hard. In many ways, the success of McDonald's is built on the backs of poorly paid overworked restaurant managers and crew.

Amazing for a first job

Pros

My manager does a great job of hiring nice people to work with, so I ended up becoming friends with most of my coworkers and hanging out with them outside of work. The work isn't difficult, and you can always move up from a crew member. Plus, it's pretty easy to get hired. The pay depends on how much you want to work, if you're a crew member.

Cons

If you cannot deal with rude people, you should reconsider working here. You will encounter new people every day, and you must be versatile enough to deal with all kinds of people. A lot of patience is necessary for this job. The only perk as a crew member is that you get a free meal during your break. There are no other discounts on food.
