Pros

The company is worldwide, with much opportunity for internal development, promotion, training, and transfer-- if you're willing to stick around and deal with all the "cons", that is.

Cons

Salaried associates are shamelessly exploited-- if a manager/supervisor can be forced to do the work of an hourly associate (or two) on top of their own, you can expect it will become the norm sooner or later. Trimming the fat is one thing, but Marriott will trim the meat and bone at the slightest budgetary shortfall, and never allow it to heal. Meanwhile, hourly associates are not compensated fairly for their hard work. Wages are determined by local market wage surveys-- but most, if not all, of the properties surveyed are apt to be Marriott, as well, in a convenient catch-22. The bottom line is, positions are not compensated as well as their counterparts in other companies-- though this is true for Hospitality in general. Corporate S.O.P. and the short-term bottom line trump all logic and nuance of property- or department- level decision-making. Local management cares more about looking good to Top Brass and making their numbers by any means necessary than truly making wise long-term decisions for the customers, associates, or company.

Pros

You have an opportunity to work with people that are really interested in the success of their organization. It's a good feeling coming to work every day knowing that the team you are working with is going to work as hard as you do. Associates are recognized for their contributions and are treated very well. Salary can always improve, but this is the hospitality industry & no one signed on to be a millionaire - you work in this industry because you love this industry (and you like to travel). Associate rate benefits are amazing - and with so many hotels, vacations are actually encouraged as it allows us to see how other hotels operate.

Cons

Wages within the hospitality industry are generally lower than other industries. Had I gone into finance or accounting in college rather than hospitality, I may make more money. That said, this is a company you can feel comfortable with for life. I have many friends from college who are on their third or fourth company & don't really create that bond or have that company culture. Here, there's the culture. If I want to move somewhere, there's a good chance that there's a Marriot with opportunity there (even in this economy).

Pros

Marriott has a great corporate culture. They are very dedicated to growing their associates and making sure that work enviroment is acceptable.

Cons

The associates tend to stay with the company. While this is great for the companies culture it reducies oppertunity for advancement.
