Pros

The HR team at Kmart was pretty accommodating for me around my schedule most of the time, especially considering it's a retail store. While the pay wasn't great, I also was making more than many friends were at fast food restaurants, and I didn't come home smelling like work.

Cons

Corporate management hog-ties store management, so all decisions are made by headquarters rather than managers on the "front lines". Newer, younger employees training is often inadequate, and therefore create a lot of slack for other hard-working employees to clean up, and management either doesn't realize it or does nothing to stop it. Company culture of management and associates is not as pro-customer as it should be (though better than Wal-Mart's culture this way). Customers pay for the products, and pay the paychecks indefinitely, and yet most employees still shrug them off like nuisances. Managers don't help this culture as much as they should. Little or no advancement opportunities available for those willing to work hard. No incentive to bust your butt, because at the end of the day your paycheck is the same size as someone else who sat on their butt the entire time while you're drenched in sweat from clearing pallets. Management does nothing.

Pros

Good Pay vs the competitors for this position... Blue Cross / Shield insurance is a plus. Work week varies so weekends off are about 1 time per month.

Cons

Kmart is like a dog with all bark and no bite. The company talks about competing with Target and Walmart, yet refuse to spend the labor necessary for customer care. As a manager at Kmart, you will find yourself carrying patio furniture out to customer's cars, covering associate breaks at the service desk, and searching for employees that are hiding in the corners of the building.

Pros

Kmart does have opportunities to catch shoplifters due to the kind of customer that it brings in. Depending on your Loss Prevention Manager, you will have a good chance for advancement.

Cons

Horrible pay. There are many times that I do assignments that are not related to Loss Prevention. It feels like there's not enough employees to do everything so you are kind of a gopher to do anything management needs you to do.
