The Change of Portland Culture at a micro level.

Pros

There are some great people that work at the KCE headquarters.

Cons

The executive level is horrid, most come from the GAP and think that they can sell early-childhood education like a pair of jeans. The HR department has taken over all aspects of the company, from education and marketing to real estate. The future CEO is being groomed from this department but really just talks in HR speak. There is a weird junior-high style clique that has formed in HR and is kind of the antithesis of what Portland used to be but has the same yuppie feel of the Pearl District. They are trying to make a big push in the market the next few years to sell again. The more you polish a turd, its still a turd. The departments are kept in the dark about what other departments are doing.

Pros

The biggest, and really the only, perk is the childcare discount.

Cons

I spent 10+ years with the company and finally had to leave because the position was unbearable. The pay is low in comparison with the level of stress you will be under. Although you are salaried for 40 hours, this is NOT a 40 hour/week position. I regularly worked 45-50 hours/week. The Director position requires impeccable multitasking skills and the ability to put yourself and your own family second to the families and teaching staff at your school. There is a bonus structure but the goals/expectations rarely set the director up to succeed and actually earn the bonus. The scope of this position continues to grow but no additional support is provided. Overall, I would not recommend this position without a full understanding that this is a high stress, high pressure position with very little financial benefits in return.

Pros

The teaching ratio for the toddler age was pretty good: 1 teacher to 4 children. So, toddler classrooms had 2 teachers and 8 toddlers. The center was next to trail which made for a great outside activity. Most of the teachers working there are dedicated and passionate about their job. Playground was a very good size. Lesson planning/curriculum was really great, easy to use, and easy to tailor to different developmental levels.

Cons

The leadership is very disorganized: poor communication internally (with each other) and externally (to teachers). Classrooms were pretty small for toddlers to have space to run around and play. Set up of the building was very inconvenient. There was one main entrance and parents/teachers had to walk through several other classrooms to get to destination. While the playground was a good size, the equipment/toys were sparse in comparison to how many children there were. Many times it would take weeks/months to get desired classroom materials, even when leadership was given plenty of notice. There was a ton of turnover, which I know is typical for daycares/development centers. In my year there I saw at least 20 people leave. The concerning thing was that many people left for negative reasons: couldn't stand the leadership, pay was too low, etc.
