Pros

Cordial culture. The Credo permeates the organization globally. High-quality, high-integrity colleagues to learn from. Lots of room for career growth (in most areas, but not all). Nice work environment with great office resources. Very good benefits.

Cons

A lot of what made this company different has gone away. What was a very special company is now more just like every other company. The company is behind-the-times on flexible and remote work arrangements. Management is very numbers-focused; very concerned (but not obsessed) with meeting quarterly EPS, etc. Direction from above is often "do more with less," which makes for an increasingly stressful and frustrating work-life balance at a company that used to pride itself on being a "family company." Office politics can get in the way of getting thing done, and egos get exponentially larger as you go up through the executive ranks. Too many resources are dedicated to the image of the CEO, who is overly concerned about his own personal image. Whatever he wants, he gets, regardless of budgets. Credo indoctrination leads to a "we can do no wrong," holier than thou attitude toward competitors, regulators, and critics.

Pros

The compensation and benefits are decent

Cons

I, and the majority of my coworkers at my site, was recently laid off from their infectious diseases department as part of the Janssen pharmaceutical unit and it has been such a blessing to no longer work for this company. They wax poetic at every meeting about adhering to their values and caring for their patients and employees, but those "values" have always been cast aside for the sake of profit margins and stakeholders. What "healthcare" company lays off its entire infectious diseases department right on the heels of a global pandemic? Their HR system is an absolute nightmare to deal with, work-life balance is minimal (I would regularly be receiving emails at midnight from people in my own time zone), and we were so clearly cogs in a machine. Whenever upper management would come to visit the site, we were required to schedule lab work to make us look "busy and productive", so the millionaires could watch us make money for them. It's a company entirely concerned with profit and optics. It is so massive and poorly managed that every little process is arduous and covered in red tape and corporate rules. You cannot contribute to a company that large as an individual; it was a very erasing and demoralizing experience. Working there made me consider abandoning my career in the sciences entirely.

Pros

Was a good company when I first started and the experience is differentiated based on who your direct manager and team are. Benefits were decent, most people are nice, and lots of smart people to work with.

Cons

New CEO and senior leadership are out of touch - demanding longer work hours, unwilling to adjust pay to fair market conditions, and reducing bonus while they sit in their ivory tower with millions of dollars in bonus after quietly laying off large portions of the workforce. The last soul of what J&J used to be died when our CMO left and with him, many executives have left as well. Paraphrasing from a townhall, executive leadership accuses employees are working longer hours because they are working from home and are not as productive. Advancement is based off of who you know and the color of your skin even though J&J tries to create optics that they care about DEI. Employees are criminally underpaid and they pride themselves in squishing levels. This is an empty shell of a company and no longer is a good place to work.
