Big Projects. Zero Focus on People.

Pros

Jacobs delivers big projects so there are great opportunities for younger staff to gain good experience in the earlier stages of their careers.

Cons

Despite internal spin to the contrary, Jacobs has absolutely zero focus on people. The annual performance review is a sham that even management roll their eyes at; too many mid-level managers are motivated solely by metrics and spend zero time mentoring and developing talent; these same managers too often adopt a "if you don't like it, leave" attitude that results in the continual and senseless loss of key staff. The Buildings and Infrastructure team in Texas seems to be in self-destruct mode with great folk leaving in numbers even though there's a healthy marketplace with plenty of work.

Pros

They do have a great environment with great benefits while you are actually working with them. The job is generally fun, the assignments interesting, and the management friendly.

Cons

They don't understand the concept of "retention". I've been laid off from Jacobs three times. They never fight to keep any particular position, only the overall contract, and they are more than happy to lay anyone off at any time. They talk a good talk about how you can look for other jobs within the company, but they don't believe in giving any assistance with this endeavor. It is as useful as applying from the outside.

Pros

Multi-disciplinary, so there's usually someone with the answer to your question. 9 day fortnight + flexible working Not a bad pension contribution Good career opportunities if you're prepared to blow your own trumpet... don't expect others to see it.

Cons

Process driven... so lots of forms and paperwork. Limited authority: there's massive restrictions on who can authorise purchases, training etc. which means there's about 20 people needed to sign something off. Lot of deadweight... company is so vast they slip under the radar, even with the draconian focus on billability. Visible time wasting on Facebook, BBC Sport etc. in the mornings and at lunchtimes. Role titles are there to fit with the payscale, not the actual job. There's hundreds of directors who aren't actually directing anything... they're just "do-ers" to meet billability targets. Long hours, and they never say NO to a client or pushback on questionable decision-making... they take the money and just keep saying YES.
