Pros

Some great people at Jacobs that try hard to make the office an enjoyable place. Morning tea get togethers once a month Possibility of job transfers

Cons

Jacobs is a big company that is constantly evolving by buying other companies or selling off sections of their own. They value profit above all else. If your project makes money for them you are gold but if your project makes a loss you are in trouble. The company has alot of overheads especially on small projects as you need to factor in safety officer, quality audits and also any internal project reporting (approx. 2-10hrs+) a month and profit gets eaten up by this. Being a US company there's a disconnect as business systems and culture don't really mesh with an Australian office. You might see a US senior staff maybe once a year but get daily US updates by email. Jacobs bangs on about safety but in my office the safety person was made redundant and his role replaced by an excel worksheet on safety/ risks which is fairly ironic. Managers are hired on their sales man talk, sometimes they don't even understand the work people in their sections do. Jacobs is happiest if they can send you out on secondment at 3x your salary and never see you - so really just like a job shop. If you are office based you need to be 70% billable to projects at least and if you are not it's your fault...not your mangers as they expect staff to find your own projects for the company.

Pros

This job was a great opportunity to me coming right out of university. The environment was very relaxed, and the people were very friendly. I was given the opportunity to work and learn under senior engineers both in person and in other offices.

Cons

The company has a hard time retaining young talent in it's offices. There was not enough training provided to teach me the skills required to work on some projects, therefore, I was excluded from bid jobs because clients obviously do not want to pay for training. Because this is a consulting job, if there are no clients, there is no money. As 2018 ended, I did not have a lot of project work, which made it difficult to find projects to get 40 hours a week. In the end, this is one of the factors that lead to me leaving the company.

Pros

This is a global company so you can get the opportunity to work on projects literally anywhere in the world and applying some cutting edge designs. There are benefits but you need to dig around to find some such as the Jacobs staff discount available for new car purchases from particularly dealerships.

Cons

The travel policy changes depending on whatever deal Jacobs has forged with their global partners, e.g. a sudden change from Qantas as preferred to do not use and forcing all employees to use AMEX, in order to generate rewards for senior management, AMEX is not accepted widely in Australia so employees need to use their own cards to pay and then run the gauntlet to get reimbursed. The spot bonuses are a joke and only go to whoever the managers like not the real performers. Career advancement is even more linked to relationships that performance. They have an anual performance review where the managers make employees set stretch targets but even if you reach them there is no financial bonus... annual raises are again at the managements discretion (don't believe it is linked to the market). If you are technically minded and want to go far in your career go somewhere else, if you are great at sales then you'll probably love it. Unfortunately many of the managers now are there because they are good at refining budgets as opposed to great at managing people and projects , some don't even have any technical skills related to the teams they oversee so don't even understand what their teams are doing.
