Pros

The Interaction Design Foundation has a fantastic culture that is among the best I've seen at the companies I’ve worked for. Everyone really cares about their colleagues and especially the students who have entrusted their education to us. I feel privileged to educate the designers of tomorrow. I work with students from all over the world, and that helps me reinforce my belief that design is truly a cross-cultural and universal matter.

Cons

Language can present a challenge when working with students who aren’t proficient in English.

Pros

The IDF is a super dynamic company. Although it is a virtual office and every team member is in a different country and time zone, they have succeeded in creating and maintaining a great team spirit. You do not get lonely or feel like you are a team of one, and everyone is ready to lend a hand. I've really enjoyed my time at the IDF. :-)

Cons

I can't really think of any cons!

Thanks so much for your kind words! That really mean a lot to all of us! You're right, team spirit is particularly important because we're a fully remote organization. That's why we put such a lot of energy and resources into improving and maintaining it. "Culture eats strategy for breakfast", as the saying goes, so it's vital to keep cultivating and improving our company culture - *especially* since we're a fully remote organization.

Pros

I appreciate the following things about the company culture in the IxDF: - A noble mission of helping make the world a better place. Not as a cliché - but in real, measurable terms. - A relentless focus on quality and impact. - No office politics and bureaucracy - but a focus on what really matters. - We combine the approach of a studio and a factory: In “studio mode”, we’re collaborative, idea generating and everyone can chime in (great for your extroverted sides). In “factory mode”, the mantra is “ideas are worthless without execution” and we get stuff done (great for your introverted sides). - A focus on hiring *senior* professionals only. - We don’t waste time on the latest and most hyped tools. We try to find a balance between sticking with what works and exploring the new. - A pragmatic approach to process/method. We can do a full-circle Design Thinking process for a new feature. Or we can use independent judgement and intuition to quickly make a decision and ship a feature. It all depends on the context and we’re not caught up in process for the sake of process. - A hands-on approach where even the founders love to participate in work.

Cons

I have seen colleagues become disgruntled and unhappy in the following situations: - When a senior team member realizes that he/she does not have adequate execution skills. Some former colleagues have fallen into the trap of “illusory superiority” where they seem to feel they are too senior to be asked to produce actual results. - When a team member can not effectively work in a team.

Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to leave this review. I’m glad you brought up the subject of helping make the world a better place, which is something that is at the core of our mission. As you said, it can sound like a cliché, but it drives much of the decision making for us an organization, meaning that most of the things we do improve the quality of our courses. This way, the hundreds of thousands of designers that take these courses can go out into the world with their newly found knowledge and create amazing product and services that can make the world a better place.
