3 years in IxDF - is it worth it?

Pros

After 3 years (and counting!) at IxDF, I think it is high time to write a Glassdoor review. Spoiler: I really like it in here :-) Starting from the bread and butter, IxDF always pays on time, like clockwork. At the same time, it does not require any bureaucracy, just a simple invoice, and we are set. This is huge! And from there it only gets better. I know my work at IxDF is meaningful. The things I do (mostly course videos) are time well spent for me, the company, and most importantly, the learners. This might sound a bit grandiose, but the reality is that each day, we improve the learning experience for our members (and anyone who wants to develop in her/his career). There is no other goal here. Of course, we need to reach those designers, so marketing is a big part of it, but “marketing” as Seth Godin defines it - a force for the good, a force to convince people to take action on improving their lives. The work environment is 100% remote. You are rarely expected to respond right away. (I was even encouraged to get off Slack more often, as it distracted me too much - thank you, Roman.)That does not mean one can ignore communication; on the contrary, we get less of it than in an ordinary company, so it gets more focus. I know remote work is not for everyone. It took some time for me to adjust, but once I did, there was no going back to office 9-5. At least for me. At times, it is a bit lonely, but honestly, when I was working in the office, I often wished some of those people would disappear :-) In IxDF, we get 1-1 non-work zoom calls, so we get to know our colleagues at least a bit. It does not compare to workmates you’d meet daily in person, but for me, the positives of remote work outweigh this one downside. My day is owned by me. Sure, I have a lot to do in IxDF, but I get to decide how I plan it out. Almost as if …I was a grown-up human being :-) No one says: “Where have you been from 12:30 till 13:15? We couldn’t reach you.” At times, I need to be more accessible (closer to the launch dates, etc.) but it is never “the office in and out”. Is it all roses? No, because the flip side of it is 1) I must stay organised, no one will do it for me, 2) I could be working in my mind 24/7, so I need to build a healthy work-life balance myself. To me, it is well worth it, so much better than any other job I had before. Internally, we are improving the workflows (recently, using AI more and more, but not blindly, only when it gives the best results and improves the workflow), so they are never rigid, set in stone, or unavoidable rules. Sure, a good workflow should be followed closely, but your input is more than welcome if it is not for you or can be improved. As a result, even if you have repetitive, purely executional tasks (yes, we have them here too), you are sure you are doing them in the most efficient way possible. Not efficient still? You can improve it, and no one will get offended :-)

Summing up: If you want to have a meaningful impact on the world and are not afraid of the responsibility that comes with freedom, working at IxDF is for you. Please join!

Cons

Responsibility equal to freedom of a fully remote, results-driven environment. If you’d rather be directed what to do all the time IxDF is not a good employer for you.

Pros

I've genuinely really enjoyed my time at IxDF so far. You get to work alongside incredibly driven, smart, and high-achieving people, including working directly with the founders, which is rare and refreshing. If you have ideas, you're encouraged to run with them. There's a lot of responsible freedom here, which means you're trusted to own your projects and make an impact without unnecessary micromanagement. One of the biggest advantages for me is that IxDF has a mission you can actually feel good about contributing to. It’s incredibly fulfilling to work for a company that’s making a positive difference, and it makes showing up for work every day that much more meaningful. Other perks: -Fully remote team: If you love the work-from-home lifestyle, this is perfect. The company is truly built for remote work!! -Collaborative, supportive culture: Even though we're remote, there's a strong sense of connection. People are kind, intelligent, and genuinely care about doing great work. Also, it is always amazing to get to see them during the team trips - last year we went to Dubai :) -Opportunities to grow: Because of the trust and freedom you're given, there's room to step up, take ownership, and advance your skills in ways that bigger, more rigid companies don't always allow. You always have the opportunity to contribute to other projects and learn new skills and I think that is awesome!

Cons

It’s not a disadvantage per se, but it’s worth noting that IxDF is a smaller company, which means you work very closely with your teammates and leadership. If you’re not self-motivated, proactive, and enthusiastic about your work, it will show. Everyone here is highly driven, so if you prefer a more laid-back environment or need a lot of external structure, this might not be the best fit.

Pros

I've had an outstanding journey with the Interaction Design Foundation (IxDF), and I'm thrilled to share my positive experience. The culture at IxDF is truly remarkable - a dynamic environment filled with fantastic individuals who maintain high standards without compromising on support. What sets IxDF apart is their commitment to excellence without making you feel overwhelmed. It's like a healthy competition where you're constantly challenged, but there's a genuine sense of safety and trust. I appreciate how they trusted me in various stages and actively supported me in balancing my personal and professional life. One standout quality is their ability to celebrate achievements, creating a motivating atmosphere. Communication is top-notch, making collaboration seamless. The emphasis on cooling down during pressure moments is a game-changer. In essence, IxDF provides an incredible culture, ample opportunities for growth, and surrounds you with exceptional people. It's been a rewarding journey, and I'm excited about the continued growth and success with IxDF.

Cons

One aspect for potential improvement at IxDF could be enhancing the visibility of our long-term product journey. While we currently benefit from a concise monthly planning process, a broader bird's-eye view of the product roadmap could be invaluable.
