Pros

Amazing teammates. Lots of cold salads.

Cons

Any decent leader would apologize for this crazy layoff. I was at indigo for longer than most, and because I thought we were doing good work. And this is how you treat us? Without any notice, we had to leave after meeting with our team leader and getting laid off out of the blue? We didn't even had time to send out thank you emails or exchange personal contact information, because our email/slack were deactivated immediately and we were immediately escorted out the door by yet another new hire from the “people team”.

Constantly Insulted by Management

Pros

Salary is somewhat competitive. Most employees are passionate, helpful, and wonderful coworkers.

Cons

Recent layoffs were poorly handled, many knew they were being laid off well before it happened due to a "tech error". When the CEO was asked how he would deal with the low morale after lay offs, he specifically stated that that's the nature of this company and "if you're not happy, Indigo is not the place for you". With the COVID-19 pandemic, lab personnel were forced to continue coming into the lab under the guise of working in agriculture. Employees were told to come into work with few safety measures, masks (not required for some time and sparsely available), or protocols in place until a month after the initial stay at home order. Employees have been lied to about precautions taken by upper management regarding cleaning of office and lab spaces. There is such a complete disregard for safety of employees it's almost comical.

Thank you for your review. Indigo is committed to its long-term mission of harnessing nature to help farmers sustainably feed the planet. In service of this mission, our microbial team has continued their work in the lab during the pandemic. When possible, employees can work from home, however due to the nature of lab-based work, there are some who need to be in the lab. For those who had concerns about being in the office due to safety concerns, we worked with the employee and their managers to come to an agreeable solution. We have a scheduling process to maximize social distancing in labs, regularly conduct deep cleaning, and provide PPE for all lab employees. We also have a COVID-19 Task Force in place to continuously assess the risks and benefits of coming into the office for all employees – we take this very seriously and will continue to make decisions that protect the health and safety of our people. I respectfully disagree about your statement regarding being lied to about cleaning; we have followed all state and CDC guidelines for office disinfecting, from everyday cleaning to closing the office for deep cleaning when we have presumed or confirmed cases of COVID. If you do have specific concerns about office safety, please reach out directly to your manager or to your People BP so we can resolve issues right away.

Consider Carefully the Unstable Environment You May Walk Into

Pros

Indigo Ag can recruit very talented individuals with their strong mission, values, and good salary. Their mission is inspiring and more agriculture companies need to prioritize farmer profitability, sustainability, and consumer preferences. Though most individuals they hire do not have experience in agriculture, they hire very top-notch talent! They allow the opportunity, in many cases, to work remotely for good wages. Their Memphis and Boston offices are spectacular!

Cons

It is a start-up still (despite what some executives say now given the volume of employees), so changes are abrupt and dramatic. For example, many outside sales reps were laid off without being employed by Indigo for even 90 days. If not laid off/let go, your job description when hired *will* change drastically. If it does not, you are in an outlier role within the company; certainly not sales or management. There is something very important to be said for people who care about the health of the ag industry when working on a platform like Marketplace (Indigo's #1 focus for 2020). They have finally put a few managers/directors in place who are motivated particularly by the commodity trade, but no one can seem to figure out how to effectively communicate market info amongst teams. Management turnover is very high. It seems you have to build rapport with a new manager every couple of months, if not every quarter. In agriculture, you find a strong atmosphere of "people do business with people." However, people often don't do business with people if the company that person works for is known in the industry as being untrustworthy and for not executing transactions effectively.
