Pros

The company has a huge number of fingers in lots and lots of different pies and there is the potential to move around within the company to avoid stagnation.

Cons

Reality never lives up to promises. Continual trimming of resource to make projects more efficient means frequent unpaid overtime required and eliminates the possibility of doing more interesting work in favour of maintainance cycles and at best, minor incremental improvements. Worst of all, even where there is scope for improving efficiency to help mitigate these problems in later cycles there's no time available to implement it.

Pros

Good benefits, competitive pay, flexibility in hours (depending on manager) and being able to work from home. The company has an international presence so you'll get to work with people literally all over the world. Depending on the position, you'll have opportunities for travel.

Cons

There is a lot of talk about work life balance but that's not really the culture. While there is often some recognition for hard work/insane hours it rarely pays off financially. Also raises and bonuses have dried up despite the company's good performance. In most departments, many positions get back filled to places like China and India. This makes people nervous. Most of the products are not exactly that interesting to work on... but there are some cool things happening.

Pros

There are lots of global opportunities for those who want to travel or live overseas. The pay is good. The benefits are standard. Because IBM is such a huge company, there are lots of diverse opportunities -- anything from storage technologies to point-of-sale systems, hardware, software, some cutting-edge stuff and some not so cutting-edge. IBM does provide a lot of online resources but they are not easy to find--you have to be resourceful. It's great that the company is focusing so much on telecommuting -- it's really becoming more the norm. You can work from home, have an office or both (sometimes you have a choice but not always).

Cons

If you have a good manager, it makes all the difference. A bad manager, and your life can be miserable. employee morale is usually low, at least in my area, because we don't feel our jobs are secure (due to globalization and layoffs) and people feel pressure to work overtime. Sometimes it seems that IBM consists of a bunch of little fiefdoms with little communication between them. Also, some way-up corporate layer makes "money-saving" decisions that often winds up lumping way too many projects under a first or second line manager, giving them little room to devote necessary resources or energy.
