Pros

Flexibility is the key, I do what I want, when i want, I head in late, and I leave early. As long as I get my work done, no one says anything to me. It's almost like working for your own company that is barely struggling along. The people are great too, and if it weren't for them IBM would have a HUGE problem retaining people.

Cons

PAY SUCKS, don't come here to be rich, or even decently paid. Even when told you are doing well, you will not get rewarded. No stories of great raises/bonuses/stock options. Just keep your head down, and work,

Pros

IBM is a large company with many opportunities to have and hold many different positions through a long career. Opportunities from manufacturing to sales and everything in between exist. Services, technical, admin, staff, teaching, HR, sales, graphic design, TV and Video production, food service, etc. There are few companies where you can have this kind of exposure to many different positions. Large companies offer more stability, excellent benefits, and a diverse work environment.

Cons

It's a big company. It's easy to get lost. Salary growth can be stagnant. Without establishing a network at the company, you will get lost. Many IBM workers are mobile workers and a sense of community can be lost if you aren't active in establishing it for yourself. This isn't the IBM of 25 years ago where Respect for the Individual was paramount and employee loyalty fueled its success. Lifelong employment at IBM is no longer guaranteed no matter how hard you work.

Pros

IBM is the largest education provider in the industry. Consultants are given ample opportunities to work for multiple clients (both internal and external), thus increasing their flexibility and adaptability...this is an important skill to possess in today's rapidly changing business environment. In the past 4 years, I have had clients in banking, retail, manufacturing, telecommunications, insurance, and credit. Every client has had a unique business culture, and adapting to a new environment at the beginning of an engagement is both challenging and rewarding. IBM still offers excellent medical, dental, and vision programs. They offer a progressive 401K system to every employee, as well as access to coaches who can help them manage their finances. IBM also offers work-from-home arrangements...a real life saver with four dollar a gallon gas prices. Finally, the IBM Credit Union offers services such as auto aquisition, home/car/boat financing, student loans, and group insurance.

Cons

Excessive hours. Mandatory travel. Persons who refuse to (or who are unable to) travel are usually told to leave the company. Odd hours (several of my "team" members are in Australia, India, and China)...making evening work a given.
