Pros

It has a good brand name. The pay was decent, initially.

Cons

Projects are routinely undersold. Employees are placed in roles unsuitable for their career or skillset. Executive Management is out of touch with the day-to-day realities of running the company. There is a bureaucracy that only the government or the USSR can match. Despite management trumpeting efforts via the media on how IBM runs efficiently, the real story is often a far cry from what the media reports. It was only at IBM where I heard the acronym FUMU used - "Foul up, move up".

Pros

IBM has tremendous access to markets and customers. It has robust lines of business across a wide area of IT and consulting, making it possible to spend an entire career (or two) within its boundaries. IBM enjoys a solid, world-class brand and is instantly recognizable. For those that are passionate about technology, and are good communicators, this is a great place to work.

Cons

It is a huge place dominated by bureaucracy, office politics and lack of transparency from management. There is almost too much technology -- through acquisitions, legacy and research, not to speak of assets developed by IBM services, it has created an unwieldy and vast number of products, technologies and components that make it difficult to move quickly. What makes it frustrating is that there is innovation happening but IBM makes it difficult to take its own assets to market effectively

Pros

A great place if you want to telecommute, their virtual services are second to none.

Cons

Management is just plain incompetent at all levels. You'll never get a decent raise. They expect you to work 80 hour weeks in most cases. You'll get no respect from any level of management and in many cases clients are so fed up with IBM that they are just waiting for their SLAs to expire and then they go with someone else. I've seen it happen over 8 times in the last 5 years. It is absolutely appalling.
