Pros

The name recognition can enable more successful relationship building with customers, partners and even potential employers. Experience with the processes and procedures of a global corporation, which while arduous at times, can be a valuable skill to learn when navigating larger corporations. Flexibility in some positions on personal time, as HR does not force micromanagement of employees time. Ability to move around to numerous roles and organizations without ever leaving the company.

Cons

Too large and too impersonal. Corporate culture does not realistically trickle down to management level. Claims of pro-woman, pro-family is all marketing hype. The reality is that HR is ineffective and each business unit is run however that management chooses to run it. There is not a lot of incentive to be a super star or overachieve (recognition, compensation, career growth, etc…). Being a People Manager can be painful and time consuming, as the processes are never ending.

Pros

It's a great place if your in your mid-life or later-life career. The environment is easy going. Fortunately my management is very much on the order of "give the employee goals and let them at it". This lack of micromanagement style is refreshing considering this is almost a 100 year old company.

Cons

Everything is process and procedure. No authority to act in the best interest of the organization even though your judgement is trusted. You need to take the initiative and be assertive on issues. Covering your "ass" is very much in the culture, so beware. As an individual, it takes time to get used to this kind of place and the people who work here.

Pros

Company is so large and always under the business press microscope, they have to behave in a socially responsible way. And they usually do. Same is true for financial management, they are held to a high standard, and whenever they try to engineer earnings, they get called on it. Best reason to work here? Out of 100,000s of employees, some of them are actually smart and a pleasure to work with.

Cons

Too many layers of low-value management. Procurement practices are over-the-top restrictive, and get in the way of doing business.
