Pros

Lots of different things to work on. Good ability to switch jobs if you don't like what you are doing. Many jobs have the ability to telecommute if management approves. More of a results oriented management style than one focused on face time. Most first line managers are competent and seem to care about their people.

Cons

Long hours and the usual corporate stuff: bad senior management decisions, "cost cutting" that ends up costing the company more money, mass decisions that don't make individual sense, etc. Issued laptops are often very unreliable and it takes forever to get a new one.

Pros

Access to IBM software. Books24x7 access (if you have time to use it). Reasonably generous with hardware. Work-life balance is possible. Reasonable pay.

Cons

Excessive internal processes drain finite energy that ought to be directed toward customer and market success -- lots of burnout. Many different companies within one conglomerate -- not all brands are equally fulfilling to work with, and conflict between divisions can be more painful than external competition. Cheap about expenses etc. for those who travel (good luck eating on their meal allowances).

Pros

Have a reference with an IT leader on your resume.

Cons

Bureaucracy, no respect for the employee, no straight talk, the stockholder has all the rights. All the raises seem to go with the younger recruits( less than 10 years) and the more senior people don't get much. IBM considers once an employee is hooked, there is no need to give more than needed. If you are a sales rep, understanding your sales plan and how much you will get paid is rocket science. IBM seems to manipulate the figures and raising the targets beyond reason so you get paid what they want you to get paid. All this trickles down to "save as much as possible for the stockholder".
