Pros

IBM provides a diverse set of opportunities across a wide spectrum of information technology, with considerable resources available when properly aligned. There is the ability to work on significant projects and have a global impact. The company has a long history and many creative and experienced professionals.

Cons

After being wined and dined touring China and Russia, CEO Palmisano came back to US to talk about how "messy" Western democracies are and immediately began shifting jobs overseas at increasing rates including selling PC company to Lenovo. There is a large bureaucracy with lots of internal fiefdoms. Company has gone from respecting employees and striving for excellence to shooting for the middle ground across compensation and benefits. Work can be all-consuming and the wrong immediate management can make life miserable.

Pros

An extraordinary level of flexibility in where/how you work in software development. Many IBMers work at home. This is great for allowing time to deal with the demands of life.

Cons

The pressure to perform and deliver is intense and consistent while the reward is 'having a job'. The flexibility (ability to work at home at any hour) also has the ability to morph into a strong negative depending on your managements expectations and people skills. You will be expected to work from home during the evenings/late night. You will be expected to work weekends when management deems it necessary. Management will send you email on the weekend and expect a response. Management will call you on the weekend to instruct you to work on a hot problem/defect.

Pros

IBM really provides it all. If you want to work in a certain area of IT, the company does provide support tools to achieve those goals. Also, if you are an experienced project manager, you will have the opportunity to manage very large, complex installations within a few short years. The culture of IBM differs from Deloitte and Accenture in that it has a much more rigid hierarchy and is truly a corporate environment. The blue suit rule still stands.

Cons

IBM is really a mature organization, therefore, newly hired college graduates are expected to act within their roles and not make waves. Innovation that matters is true, but only if there has been a thorough business case brought to bear.
