Pros

Intelligent people, great opportunities to move either vertically or horizontally, great organization. I feel that benefits and salary, while not the highest in the industry are more than fair and employees are treated very well. It is certainly a sales driven organization so working in sales you get the best of everything (however that also includes higher expectations). However, I have friends working at Oracle and elsewhere and I certainly wouldn't trade my experience with any of their's.

Cons

Huge company, some amount of internal hassles when trying to procure things. Since it is a matrixed organization org charts can be a bit difficult to figure out.

Pros

You can work on leading edge semiconductor technology without moving to the Left Coast. They have world class technology and resources. You can work with some incredibly talented engineers. The SRDC (Semiconductor Research and Development Center) has development partnerships that allow you to work with engineers from the likes of AMD, Samsung, Chartered, Sony, Toshiba ....

Cons

Take Away's. Cut and freeze the pension plan. Increased cost for medical benefits. Hardly any salary plan for years. Stock options for non-executives, that's a thing of the past. The semiconductor division is too small a scale to ever make money. They enable IBM to make money on main frame computers but Microelectronics will never have the scale necessary to really compete with Intel or TSMC.

Pros

free e-learning, opportunity in other career paths, flexible work schedule, 401K

Cons

Lack of job security, disconnect in communications as manager and employees are scattered, hard to focus when no clear objectives defined outside of contract obligations. The raise structure, iwhich is a cost savings for IBM, and does reflect the needs of it employees, it is based on market data from all of North America. It leaves it open for them to always point to an area of the country that is doing poorly and use that as excuse to why they are unable to pay you more money.
