Pros

IBM is a great place to work, if you are a minority or a woman. If you're a woman and show the slightest spark of competence, you will fly past your male counterparts, whether or not you deserve it. Because of this, there are so many horrendous first and second level managers, as well as Senior and STSM level technical leaders.

Cons

The only way to get into the top ranks is to be the toady of a mid-level manager. If you are really unfortunate, you will work for an EO candidate who will surely take credit for your accomplishments. If you are really lucky, you'll work for one of the dwindling number of career managers (30+ years with the company) who will be straight with you.

Pros

Great work life balance (I have 2 young children at home, and I have all the flexibility I need to deal with the typical toddler/infant issues), varied experiences, great management team, IBM legacy of innovation, the pay is pretty solid, most of the people are great to work with, great reach back to some of the best technical minds in the industry

Cons

Consulting offerings are somewhat ill-defined, paths to advancement also not well defined. I work in the Intelligence Community and our presence here is limited. We cannot compete with companies like Booz Allen for the bigger projects. We often have to work as subs to other consulting firms.

Pros

The great breadth of the corporation allows for great flexibility in choosing from a wide variety jobs and locations to work. I think that as far as large companies go, I think that IBM tries to be a good corporate citizen. There is so much creativity and innovation occurring in research and development and I feel that permeates in some way thoughout the corporation. It is definitely not your father's IBM.

Cons

The same as for any large corporation... bureaucracy, lack of individual identity. It can be frustrating, as it can be for our clients, to navigate through the maze to connect with the appropriate person.
