Pros

excellent hr benefits (medical, etc). my workgroup has flexible telecommuting work option which is nice.

Cons

i work in software group. ibm software (technology-wise) is very average. management can be lots of bureacracy. ibm in the US is too big and senior management is probably looking to shrink it.

Pros

Many different projects to work in, and many teams to work with. There is a good team spirit in IBM UK which tends to put the IBM UK staff first.

Cons

The reliance on outsourcing has led to many 'managers' not actually posessing any real skills in their industy or field. In any other profession this would be unheard of, this tends to bog down any new business or contract negotiations as you are essentially dealing with people who simply dont know the product, and who are also client facing (Like a big game of chinese whispers).

Pros

There are areas within STG that truly have innovative projects underway, excellent management, and clear directions to a solid future - Alas, this picture is far from normal. I would estimate that only 3-5% of all STG employees can claim this view at any one time. The vast majority of employees, including management below executives, are at the whim of the cost cutting machine run by corporate that takes nothing but the bottom line into consideration. The best reason to work at STG? Easy - the hope that one day you too will see your thoughts and efforts used by millions of people, and they like it.

Cons

The primary downside is there are no upsides; either you perform or you are marginalized and pushed out. Cost is king, and this king is myopic in approach. There used to be (1980's -) "respect for the individual", meaning every employee was an asset to be cherished. Today every employee is a line item liability, and the only asset left is revenue.
