Pros

For the time being, the name recognition of IBM is perhaps the only positive value to working for the company. The company name still holds some weight on your resume.

Cons

IBM is a horrible place to work if you have knowledge, ethics, and drive. Employees are not treated well. Knowledge and hard work are not rewarded. Pay is nowhere near competitive for many workers. Benefits were once very good, but this has been eroded steadily. Work/life balance is no longer a concern. You are in constant fear of job security as regular layoffs come throughout the company without public disclosure. Future growth and development are no longer considered, while short-term earnings are put above all else. IBM is a place to be avoided.

Pros

IBM hires incredible talent and as a result it provides a great opportunity to learn and collectively grow your technical skills. I can say without hesitation that I am a more knowledgeable and valuable employee because of the the interaction I had with some of the IBM team. I still keep in touch with several of my peers -- both those that have left for other companies and those that still remain with IBM.

Cons

The balance of work and personal life is often lacking in order to meet objectives, make deadlines, and please clients. For some, this trade is acceptable when appropriately compensated financially and through career growth. I found both to be lacking for myself and my peers in general.

Pros

IBM is a recognized name that will help you get your next job. In some parts of the company, IBM may be an industry leader (this assertion is not true for the consulting business).

Cons

IBM is a massive company. You will not be singled out for much praise for great work. If you consistently get above average ratings, you won't get big raises (expect about 1.5%, so less than normal inflation, even raises for promotions are small), you won't have any opportunity to improve your skill set (since you will be in the same role for a few years...it's IBM's way of doing things), and you won't have the opportunity to move within the company (not unique to IBM). Overall, IBM is a place where you are expected to sit back and slowly climb the corporate ladder. Follow instructions and you can make it up at a slow pace. If you have any ambition, go somewhere else.
