Pros

The people, atmoshphere and benefits are great! They really take good care of their employees and the people that that work within HSBC really care about one another. These two items together create a great atmosphere to work in across the comapny. At times even though it is a large worldwide company it has the feel of a small interlocked company. This has benefited all the employees by working together towards common goals. The most encouraging thing in the company is that all work together to navigate the challenges the economy has to throw our way. In recent years this has been a lot from the economy.

Cons

Due to the challenging ecomony we live in right now it makes for some very challenging times in the company. This has provided impacts at several levels. Downsizing and cutbacks, but who has not felt those recently. Change in company starategy that was forced upon us by the economy not by the true direction the company was looking to head. With that said is has limited the communication from certailn levels down across the organzation. this limited communication modle has helped contribute to lowered morale in the company. It may be a sign of the times we live in, but the result is not well aceppeted by the majority of the employees.

Pros

One of the best reasons to work for this company is mobility. HSBC is a global company that makes it a priority to encourage pursuit of a wide variety of opportunities in many different locations and disciplines. Therefore, a lot of the employees stay with this company for many years due to the opportunity to keep things fresh by trying different things within the company thus creating a more well rounded employee.

Cons

The downside of working for HSBC is the current market conditions as the majority of HSBC's North American operation deals with subprime lending which obviously is a risky area to be in right now. Also, the talent and leadership of Senior Management can be more consistent.

Pros

HSBC has many reasons why it's one of the best places to work: strong brand committment, strong ethical values, respectful to the environment, investing in the employees, and good communicaiton, good benefits, and meritocratic performance management. Some of the brightest people in the corporate global population are here at HSBC. The culture is in some ways like other financial institutions but different in that a senior management truly cares about the engagement of the employees - are they happy, would they recommend HSBC, would they stay at HSBC. Environmentally, I feel like they are leading the charge. A new headquarters in Illinois is a prime example - from cisterns on roof to collect rainwater for toilets to a cafeteria that is green to energy and paper saving strategies. The green effect cascades to the consumer as well with less direct mail compared to other companies.

Cons

It's a global company and you feel the size when planning initiatives that span regions or continents. An example of this feeling is sheer paperwork and meetings. It's a facet that most people in regionalized or local companies don't feel. It's not necessarily a bad thing but part of doing business.
