Pros

-Major international name -One of the few companies headquartered in Vancouver -Recognition of work life balance -Casual work environment -Decent place to start out a career, especially if you are thinking of working globally in the future. Depends on what department or group you work for however.

Cons

-Promotion seems to be based on seniority rather than performance -Underpay employees in relation to competitors -Highly bureaucratic, many levels of hierarchy -Still a minor player in Canada -Current emphasis on cost-cutting -Focus is always on costs, rather than a total cost-benefit analysis -Lack of company social activities -Lack of communication and tight-knit culture with fellow employees

Pros

San Diego location was ideal. Call center employed many local residents. Home office in Illinois was more advanced when it came to training facilities and programs to advance the skills of the leadership teams.

Cons

Management support for training not really there. Promotions within the San Diego office were questionable. The human resources team must have been a "green" team without much experience. I witnessed interactions and conversations that should have been held as confidential that were discussed openly. This did not create an environment that compelled associates to reach out to the human resources group when a problem really did occur. The HR Director at the time was very stringent and I did not see her becoming a business partner with other leaders at the site.

Pros

Excellent Benefits. Decent employment stability. Tough economy now, limited opportunities are available in the job place. HSBC has an excellent benefit package that includes tuition reimbursement. This could alllow one to continue their education while working. Good overall health and other benefits as well. One of the few companies left that actually has a pension plan

Cons

Below average compensation and advancement opportunities
