If you’re spineless with no sense of self, you’ll likely find yourself in a nice long career at Gold’s gym, but I digress. Before I get into the nitty gritty I want to provide some validation to my opinion by making it very clear that there was a time that I adored working at Gold’s. I was a member before I was an employee and the community I was a part of in that gym meant so much to me. I was heartbroken to leave. That being said, the corruption and complete lack of professionalism within the management at Gold’s would be HR’s worst nightmare (if they had HR) and it is completely unbearable to work with. Eventually, quitting did not feel like an option. To put it lightly, no one knows what they’re doing. Working at the front desk you’ll have about 10 different people above you, and each of them are in a made up position. They don’t have enough to individually contribute to the position they’re in, so in an attempt to feel worthy they’ll begin micro managing whoever is below them, and they’ll do this with the utmost disrespect. It’s clear these people feel a lack of power in their personal lives and use their sliver of authority in this job to claim it back. I have heard weird discussions from management surrounding asserting dominance over employees and phrases like “don’t forget who I am to you”. They expect a pristine level of communication and competence from the lowest paid employees YET NONE of them reciprocate. When I suggested to the owner that we have staff meetings between front desk and management to improve communication he was so baffled by the idea that he responded with “what are you talking about?”. They don’t actually care about communication, they care about control. They have absolutely no trust in their employees. They will force you to text every move you make during your shift into a teams chat because they don’t believe you’re doing your job. They will watch you through the cameras from home on their day off and nit pick the most absurd details in your job performance. They will not communicate to you directly either. Everything is passive there because like I said at the beginning, it is the spineless individuals who do good at Gold’s. One of the highest ranking managers refused to talk or even LOOK at me the second I began expressing my concerns with the direction the company was moving in. In my last week at the job I sent an email to the entire management team asking that they simply consider the toxicity present in the work environment and encourage more respect and trust. This obviously did not go down well. In retaliation they wrote up a brand new work guideline for me to sign (I had been working 20 months at this point). When I told them I wanted to discuss it further before I signed, they threatened to call RCMP to remove me from the premises- WHILE I WAS STILL AN EMPLOYEE. (They never once threatened this treatment toward the creepy men at Gold’s that girls had to BEG to be banned.) I then promptly quit, knowing there was absolutely no hope. It’s unfortunate for me to reflect on my time at Gold’s because coming into the job, I had such a deep love for the space and community and went above and beyond for it. They always failed to recognize this however and are seemingly incapable of offering any kind of encouragement or support to their employees whatsoever. I wholeheartedly believe that this company will watch its own downfall because it is the owner himself who said to me that there is no such thing as trust and respect in the workplace. They are too insecure to receive feedback of any kind, and for a company that prides itself on “evolution and innovation” they are clearly on the wrong path. “Wise is the one who learns from another’s mistakes. Less wise is the one who learns only from his own mistakes. The fool keeps making the same mistakes again and again and never learns from them.”
The management team at Gold’s are the fools that continue to make the same mistakes and then a point finger toward someone else to blame. Good luck with your stagnancy Gold’s✌️
