Pros

As a research assistant at Georgia Tech, you can earn a PhD and a somewhat livable income at the same time.

Cons

The system of biological, biomedical science, and engineering education at the level PhD is deeply flawed in the US. There is little oversight as graduate research assistants enter the fiefdom of an academic lab. Waste, abuse of power, manipulation, and mismanagement of graduate research assistants by driven, high profile academics unfortunately seems to be the rule, not the exception.

Pros

Some professors are really good. Depends whom you work with. The quality also depends from the department to department - there are strong ISyE, BioEngineering and Computer Science departments. Other departments might not be funded as well.

Cons

Low salary, Support staff is terrible - administration is focused on making life easy for themselves. Class registration system is a nightmare. Refunds for expenses take months. A lot of travel regulations, for example receipts for dinner/lunch need to be saved, while receipts for taxis are not needed.

Pros

The people here are very nice. Everyone is very bright here unlike a lot of places nearby, so it is very nice to be able to have good long intellectual conversations if you like. If you prefer small talk, there's plenty to go around. People are supportive if you see them in person and act friendly. I guess some would call this southern hospitality but it is not rare here. I'm proud to work here at such a good employer and plan on being here for a while. The campus is looking nice with all the trees and grass most of the year, so it is a nice atmosphere.

Cons

Most of the faculty are very busy and it is difficult to talk with most of them. Finding time to talk to professors is near impossible unless you are their Ph. D. student, but that is sometimes hard as well. For their students, they do not always make themselves available and often takes several days to get any e-mail responses back about any issue. If you are the type to ask questions a lot, then watch out. There's also tons of construction going on all the time and it gets annoying when you don't know where to go to avoid traffic here. 14th St has been down for a while so everytime I have someone bring me to school, they have trouble finding it.
