Pros

In my experience, it was a generally friendly atmosphere.

Cons

Management, from store-level to region-level, is, overall, overwhelmingly incompetent across brands. The reliance upon GapCard promotions gets rather annoying. As an incredibly popular chain, the holidays are always crazy, and a lot of work has to go into store maintenance year round. Often, though semi-attributable to the failing economy, stores are completely understaffed, so one person often ends up with the duties that would normally be allotted to two to four people.

Pros

It's a fun environment to work in if you're young and enjoy the merchandise. It was rare to see anyone older working there. It was a way for me to pass the time during a summer in school, and I don't think I would have been interested in continuing my employment there even if they offered me a store manager position. Then again, managers who were in place were there for a very long time, so I'm sure if would have been tough to secure a spot period. The discount is pretty good, especially since it can be applied to all brands.

Cons

Long hours and total lack of respect of management. I felt like a work horse, and never received any positive feedback for what I did right.

Pros

It's rare to find a brand that has so much brand recognition and heritage in American fashion. The employee discount is also great. Since Gap owns a tons of stores, there are tons of opportunities and challenges the company faces which makes for an exciting job. If you are interested in fashion and want to be in San Francisco, this is a great place to start.

Cons

Given poor performance for an extended period of time, morale is low and turnover is high, which means less retention of knowledge and inexperienced employees. The organization is very functional siloed, so different functional teams working in the same brand do not communicate or coordinate enough. There is also poor portfolio management, as all three brands have some overlap.
