Pros

- Nice start-up environment, good people and cool office. - People tend to get along with each other very easily given the totally unchallenging and super repetitive job they find themselves in. - Good first experience, but do not stay too long. They will make you think GLG is the best you could find, but the reality is that there are plenty of serious companies out there that will make you feel successful and satisfied every day.

Cons

- GLG has a lot of potential in terms of people, insights and resources but it is extremely poorly managed at any level: globally, locally and on a team level (a part few exceptions). - Directors/Management (some of them coming from top strategy consulting firms) are not able to design proper and fair targets/metrics based on regional differences and account complexities. - In almost 3 years some colleagues/peers generated more targeted ideas and strategic plans than what we have seen from the top management. And such feedback was never acted upon, and dismissed because of “lack of tenure”. - Some Directors are completely disconnected from the reality of the business and do not spend enough time on the floor to really understand how the business works. - Local leaders do not have the guts/power to fight any wrong decision coming from the US and they are unable to develop a long-term European strategy based on specific market needs. - Not to mention that some leaders/managers only worked at GLG for their entire life and do not really know how the rest of the world works. -->Overall GLG has an identity problem that is reflected on everything: roles, targets, culture and strategy. GLG is neither a tech company, nor a consulting firm or an investment group. GLG is a knowledge intermediary or middleman. As all intermediaries, GLG cannot survive without keeping both parties happy. GLG completely depends on both clients and experts. Cambridge Dictionary defines intermediary as ‘someone who acts to arrange an agreement between people who are unwilling or unable to communicate directly’. Being able to make the connection work is the value that an intermediary should add. The question is now: How can you streamline and standardize this action? The intermediation is a dynamic process that requires constant flexibility and personal savoir-faire. Well, GLG is convinced they can do that and they are the only ones who are able to.

Sorry to read about your experience here. This is not something we are used to hearing from our former Client Service Associates, and we regret we couldn’t address your concerns while you were still with us. In your 3 years here, you probably noticed some big changes. Rapid growth requires a level of agility that can be tricky to get right. It takes time and careful consideration of all stakeholders to make sure everyone’s voice is heard. After a series of workshops around the world, listening to GLGers in every city, we recently held a company-wide Culture Jam in an effort to shape our culture in the years ahead. 82% of GLGers participated. And now, the real work beings. We have a new set of actions and behaviors that will inform us in our next phase of growth. At the heart of it all is making sure GLG is a great place to work for everybody.

Pros

- Training's pretty good - The people I joined with were great, but my team were pretty intense and I caught them talking about me negatively behind my back. - It is interesting speaking to very senior executives

Cons

I made the mistake of ignoring all the negative reviews on here. Don't be like me and do take into account what they say. Avoid this company - it is simply a way for investors to insider trade. Be careful as they mis-sell the role when you apply. For instance, you'll do very little research and you won't get to do CFA. - You're basically a tele-sales person, trying to convince people to do stuff they don't want to do - The other side is you're almost a recruiter, trying to get people to fit a certain role. If you've got a recruiting background, it'll be easier for you to get up to speed. -You just learn soft skills, and you learn no content or anything about finance at all. - Most of it is focussed on the process and on writing emails to "position" experts. - The clients treat you badly and the company treats experts really badly as if they're just the product - Very repetitive and boring, you're doing the same thing every day and not really learning anything new or developing. - You spend your days trolling through LinkedIn and sending messages to people who don't respond, and then being told off for them not responding to you. - I thought I'd learn about industry and how investors work. You don't. You ask the experts about four questions to see if they know their stuff and most of the clients don't even want to speak with you and just like receiving emails. - Management is patronising, micromanages, focuses entirely on numbers and targets - Huge amount of politics in the company with "GLG lifers", people who've spent over 4 years. Everybody's leaving all the time - hardly a good sign. - No careers progression and the senior management spend more of their time flying to all the offices doing "town halls" where they lecture the employees. There's no overarching structure. - The managers have been promoted because they're good at what they do, but they're terrible at managing others. But there is no way for them to assessed on this, so this is never changed.

Pros

Team had good office snacks Learned strong negotiation skills A few REALLY amazing, dedicated people, but hard to find. Cherish them when you find them!

Cons

I don't really know where to start. Terrible work-life balance, was spoken down to repeatedly and told that I was underperforming and not organized enough in spite of working 12+ hour days many days a week, that my workload was manageable, etc, and then they split my job amongst THREE people - two new hires and one existing employee. The workload was insane, the pressure is insane, and my direct manager was condescending and intimidating. She was VERY good at her job, but a terrible manager. Additionally, there's a lot of competitiveness and backstabbing, stepping on other people to get ahead. Different people within teams that are meant to be working together throwing each other under the bus to avoid losing marks on their metrics. Everyone is constantly protecting themselves against everyone else, and there's a lot of micromanagement, controlling and dueling groups within the same company, which ultimately hurts clients and outcomes. "Unlimited" vacation not unlimited. Was told to check my email once every day if I was out of town. Made to feel guilty for taking more than one week of vacation, and days off you're still expected to join client calls, etc. Required to be on call 24/7 for anything that may arise. Zero work-life balance. Penalized for singular 2-day family emergency in ~2 years of working there. Penalized for submitting for reimbursement for legitimate work-related costs, including international calling as required by my manager when public transport was closed and we were explicitly told not to come to the office. Furthermore, my direct manager and her manager both agreed to write me letters of recommendation. One-up manager did hers amazingly, direct manager did not ever provide me with letter in spite of promising in front of her manager she would, and several follow up e-mails. Shady practices all around. Steer CLEAR. Pay is not worth it. I learned a few good things, but competition and backstabbing is so aggressive that its an incredibly toxic work environment.
