Exciting Products - Toxic culture

Pros

It's hard to argue with designing jet engines. Some of the most complex machines ever designed by humans that operate in incredibly unforgiving environments. People make careers out of specific details.

Cons

Very top down, command & control culture. Information does not flow down. All value is in executives. Individual contributors are just "heads". Environment encourages people to hoard information because your eligibility for promotion is based on how good you make yourself look to your leadership. Extremely siloed and compartmentalized. The managers metrics drive all the behavior, which discourages focus on the end product.

Pros

The products the company makes are amazing and super high tech. The people at GE Aviation are generally very bright and easy to work with. I feel I'm paid well for what I do. I enjoy the flexibility in work hours when I need it. The work is challenging and satisfying. GE still has a very generous tuition reimbursement program. Many Aviation sites have a team based work environment. (Self-empowered teams). I feel like I'm constantly learning new things.

Cons

Benefits have diminished over the past 6-7 yrs. Medical now has a high deduct. plan instead of co-pay system. GE no longer offers a pension to new hires. It seems that each year, another benefit goes away.
