Pros

Great benefits, almost infinite opportunity and great job security. There are also a lot of opportunities for continuing education, as they will reimburse/fund a lot of classes. They also have the EEDP program, which is a rotational, leadership program which looks great on resume (career builder) and exposes you to a lot of different working areas. This is invaluable for work experience, especially since the people who get promoted the quickest are those who understand projects from the systems level. The pay was competitive but did not blow me away, although the bonus was pretty nice, around 5,000 which is more than some of my other offers.

Cons

Low visability because its such a large company so unless you really ask for work and take initiative you can quickly become "lost." I definitely recommend having an ambitious attitude and really ask for work (and not just work, important work) so that you can gain some visability. Also, the location (Lynn, mass) isn't really all that great. Kind of a run down, poor area. On the flip side Boston is close if you like big cities, but Lynn and the surrounding area is definitely not a nice place to be in. And so if you wanna live in a nice area, its gonna be a good 20+ min commute at least.

Pros

Highly competitent and talented co-workers. Can do attitude. Exciting technology and business.

Cons

Insane restrictions on travel budgets. Impossible to advance to Executive Band and above without being "annointed" early in your career. H.R. controls who advances - not a "meritocracy." Many aviation job skills don't translate to other GE businesses except for generalist roles: HR, finance & legal. This also limits career advancement opportunities. Salary reviews are decoupled from annual performance reviews - salary increases are on a 14 to 18 month cycle and don't keep up with inflation. The biggest problem is making the quarterly income numbers - budget limitations often stifle business growth.

Pros

The prestige of the company helps, but not too much, the fact that you work for a 300,000 employee conglomerate filled with 50 year olds and some out-dated managers who haven't seen today's youth at work.

Cons

Managers tend not to work with you, as it was for me when I was a component test engineer. Managers run "cells" or areas, where it splits into smaller divisions. In smaller divisions, you work for other more qualified employees who you want to be your manager, since they observe the actual work that you perform. Managers get calls from these employees about your performance, rather than taking a minute to observe the work that you do.
