Pros

They will hire ANYBODY who will work cheap.

Cons

* The company is largely run by ex-military and sports stars. They are very backward and disrespectful of women in general: wages, promotions (not one female director in a huge store), simple respect in conversation, or expectations. *They advertise a full time position, then offer you part-time, telling you right at your interview that "you'll probably need a second job"! Outrageously insulting. Then your schedule is constantly all over the map making that impossible. I had one day changed 3 different times. * You will likely lose your job before you ever get into the union (or on the benefits plan). * They fire new people for other peoples' dishonesty and mistakes. I was astounded at what they did to a cashier (after giving her a mere 7 hours off between holiday shifts too). * there is a lot of turf wars between petty managers who are hungry for authority-it's pretty funny sometimes. * There are a LOT of people working there who are hurt. The stores do not invest in adequate equipment, so people are working with defective, dangerous, and inefficient crap. * I wish I had voice-recorded the promises made to me at my interview: all lies! So many lies!

Pros

All of my coworkers were very nice and I liked being at work because of them.

Cons

Every single employee I know hates working there. No one wants to be there. They don't hire enough people so you are overworked and feel like you must go into work even when you are sick because there is no one to cover your shifts. The pay is abysmal. If you get sick during the week of a holiday, even though you have sick time and even though you worked the holiday, you lose your holiday pay. It's a union job but the union does absolutely nothing to help workers. I talked to my union rep once and he was never seen from again. The managers are bad at their jobs. They don't know how to right a schedule, they take advantage of you, and they don't treat you with any respect. They never take responsibility for their mistakes or actions and shove blame and work onto others who can't complain. Corporate is swimming in money while people work for low wages in severely understaffed stores. It is grotesque.

Pros

Most departments try and work with you and your schedule. There tends to be a sense of community between your co-workers

Cons

NO support from management. Totally unrealistic expectations. They do company, management and work environment surveys but nothing changes, and that is what happened throughout my 10 years working there. Fred Meyer does raises based off of hours worked, and to have received my final raise it would have taken me 25 years. And that wage was under the Portland average for my previous position. I was on the union negotiations team, and the Fred Meyer representatives laughed at us when we asked for a nickel more than what the food department received. Reason why that's sad is because the non-food departments make a $1+ less than the food department.
