Pros

College students who are only planning to be employed a short time may benefit from some managers willingness to accomodate a student schedule.

Cons

"Good ol'Boy" mentality among managers makes sure only white males and the occassional female get promoted. Human Resource is ineffective in dealing with complaints often resulting in retaliation by management. Not the sort of place you would want to work if you are the sort of person to blow the whistle on racial, sexual, or any other kind of personal discrimination.

Pros

A sense of community, friendly staff, safe and clean environment to work in

Cons

No flexibility, poor communication with management, changes are very slow to implement, once 'released' the support system is no longer there.

Pros

The hours are flexible, and the pay is reasonable, as most stores are union. The benefits are quite good as well (i.e. medical, dental, fringe benefits--employees get 10% off non-food products, with about 5 or 6 "double-discount days" a year). You can learn a variety of skills, and will certainly develop a good work ethic if you decide to stick around longer than one month.

Cons

Corporate only promotes based on whether the book, however wrong it may be. It is mandatory that the department manager posts the schedule at 5 pm on Thursday--no sooner, no later. Stores are drastically under-staffed, while corporate (Portland) refuses to hear excuses as to why something wasn't accomplished. It is normal to receive a phone call during any time of the night when someone calls in sick, or if something went wrong. They expect you to be available at any time. Virtually no one within the stores is happy with their job. Turnover is very high, especially in store management.
