Pros

There are many opportunities for someone inexperienced to grow skills.

Cons

Regularly expected to be available even during non-work hours. Pay is below market. Management is insecure and loves to micromanage. You get PTO but don't you dare use it. Oppressive and toxic work environment where leadership regularly drives from the back seat. You'll be promised a promotion for unacceptable amounts of time but they'll make excuses to not follow through. If you're a high performer then look somewhere else because they expect you to be a "lever puller". Systems architects participate like they have no skin in the game. The red tape and dotted line nonsense favors corporate political games. Middle management makes bets as to how they can reach metrics by forcing deliverables that are unreasonable.

Pros

The standout feature of this company is undoubtedly the people. There is a genuine "all in it together" mentality and a fantastic team spirit where successes are celebrated regularly. Management (in my experience) is incredibly supportive and truly cares about their staff as individuals. We operate on a high level of trust; the company is very accommodating regarding family commitments or flexible starts/finishes. Being in a niche industry, the work is intellectually stimulating and there are constant opportunities to learn. For those who are proactive, the career development is excellent—I have personally benefited from the apprenticeship and mentorship programmes.

Cons

The primary challenge is the sheer volume of work in operational roles. Technical issues can take a long time to resolve while staff manage heavy workloads. This often bleeds into work/life balance; while long hours aren't explicitly mandated, the culture is filled with high-achievers who frequently work late to meet deadlines. Additionally, while career opportunities exist, they aren't always transparently publicised; you have to be very proactive in networking and "selling" your own skills to progress.
