Rewarding, but challenging work - Programme policy officer World Food Programme Employee Review

Pros

Worked at a regional office. Some bright minds there, and some really fun and kind group of people. A global survey found that the workforce felt an especially high sense of fulfilment/pride in the work they do - I found this to be true, with a strong sense of mission and ability to work on some real tangible problems. The work is dynamic and interesting, especially in programme/logistics/operational teams.

Cons

1. Like any huge organizations, your experience can depend on the team you are in. While the majority of supervisors are kind and experienced, there are a few bad eggs that can make or break your experience. Be sure to check the vibe of your hiring manager during the interview. 2. Be aware of what your contract type means - some contract types are much more limited than others and this can dictate your compensation and longevity with the org more than you may realise. Don't be afraid to ask these questions about your contract in your interview. In addition, be prepared that many contracts are dependent on funding, which brings a degree of uncertainty. 3. For some teams, there is an expectation that you are ready to deploy to emergencies at the drop of a hat. This can be challenging to plan life around, but this depends on what your function/role is.
