Pros

They do what they say they will do. You get to write reponses and if you follow the guidelines, you get paid. The community is very friendly and helpful. You can always log in and get to work. Always plenty of jobs to choose from. For a select talented few who either have access to high powered tools or have training and backgrounds that allow them to uncover data not accessable to your average person, it can be a good -but not great- gig.

Cons

Clients and research reviewers are unrealistic about their expectations. Clients routinely request complicated research that takes a substantial time investment by the researcher. They're not simply looking for general answers easily found with a quick google search. They're looking for a "deep dive" of the subject and expect a thorough, insightful response. For example: "What is the market size for people in the US who want to build a startup company that makes a product they dont know how to create and cant pay someone to create it?" Im not saying that question isnt answerable. Im just wondering how much time you think it would take to research the data and write a 500+ word response to it? You're not going to be able to bs youre way through it. Consider that the MOST you can make for a response right now is $36. Also consider that the only way a request becomes worth $36 is if it sits on the board for 2 days. Which means nobody wants to answer it or they are unable. The list of requests to choose from is riddled with questions maybe not so ridiculous as that, but either pretry ridiculous or very complicated nonetheless. Wonder is well aware of this conundrum, by the way. It seems their business model is to rely on a continual stream of new talent who are willing to grab "gigs" and invest a lot of time researching topics in order to secure their spot. I ber most figure out after a handful of jobs that the time required to produce a quality response isnt worth the pay. I know I did.

Wonder Research Response

Thanks for the feedback - we want new researchers to have a great experience and stick with Wonder long-term, so understanding where there's dissatisfaction helps us improve the platform for everyone. Wonder responses typically take 1-3 hours, but there is a learning curve for new researchers. That's why we created 'Wonder for Beginners' (a 10-minute crash course on the Wonder platform), and why we have senior researchers sharing their favorite resources and databases each day, and why we ask reviewers to provide guidance and feedback on the drafts they read. As a result, researchers get a lot faster over time. If you have any other thoughts on this, I'd love to hear more - you can reach me at research@askwonder.com
